Nursery and Day School

Philosophy
The St. Paul's Nursery and Day School was founded in 1948 with the belief that a child's natural curiosity and love of play provide an ideal framework for learning. That philosophy still applies.

Application
Interested parents may contact the Headmistress, Martha Scott Schafer (703-549-1974), for detailed information about the school and/or to obtain an application.

Age range
Our classes are organized by age groups: three-year olds, four-year olds, and kindergarten.

Hours of operation/school year
St. Paul's Nursery and Day School meets Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, September through May.

Admissions policy
Until February 1 of the year in which a child is to be enrolled, St. Paul's School accepts children, depending on space available, according to the following priorities based on the date of application:

  1. Children already attending

  2. Children whose parents have served on the board of directors or as teachers

  3. Children of parents who have been active, pledging members of St. Paul's Church for at least one year prior to the start of the school year in September

  4. Brothers and sisters of those attending

  5. Brothers and sisters of alumni who have graduated from our kindergarten

  6. Children of alumni

  7. All others

Class size
Our student/teacher ratio is 5 to 1. The children are given opportunities to participate in large groups, small groups, and individual activities. Each child receives individual attention from a number of different teachers.

Staff
Each class has two full-time teachers who are supported by a music/movement teacher, a language resource teacher, an enrichment resource teacher and a resource aid, a computer teacher, and a librarian.

Chapel/worship services
Each of the classes participates in simple chapel services once a week and an all-school worship service four times a year.

Governing body
St. Paul's is a non-profit corporation whose Board of Directors includes the rector of St. Paul's, the headmistress, members of St. Paul's parish, and parents of students.

Scholarships
Scholarships are available to children in the community based upon need from either St. Paul's Church or the school's scholarship fund.
