Freedom's First Walking Tour

Sunday, February 12, 2023, 12:45 PM

Mark your calendars and RSVP today to save your spot for this special St. Paul's event on Sunday, February 12th. John Taylor Chapman of Manumission Tours will lead a private tour for up to 30 people from St. Paul’s. Space is limited so click below to reserve your spot today.

The tour will depart from the Barrett Library at 717 Queen Street at 12:45 pm. Meet us there, or join Jenni on the bricks at 12:20 to walk over together. (Please note, the 90 minute tour requires significant walking and hills.)

Here is an overview of the tour from the Manumission Tours website:

“Freedom’s Fight in Alexandria” -- This 90 minute guided walking tour through the streets of Old Town will give participants insight into Alexandria's pre-civil war history of urban slavery, and highlight runaway slaves, like step-brothers Oscar and George Ball, Free African-Americans like Moses Hepburn and early abolitionists, such as pharmacist Edward Stabler, who pushed back against the "Peculiar Institution" of slavery.
